Hello,

I have a great problem. Yesterday I installed the LinuxMint 17 xfce. It asked that you dont have sufficient memory would you like to mount it i clicked yes. I lost my entire partition to one with 625 GB.

It is a Lenovo Laptop with 3GB RAM and 650GB Hard Disk with Windows 7 OS.

Please help me how to recover my data i had many personal photos only left in my Laptop.

It is Partitioned as in Windows 7 as Local Disk:C, Education:D, Personal:E, Entertainment:F. I just need my Personal Drive

Right now I have the LINUX MINT 17 xfce. Can I get my data back. Please Help me those are very important for me. My Entire family photos are there.Waiting for your reply Sir.

Thanks & Regards,

Solution
do not boot in to your computer from your Harddrive to avoid overwriting any data!

Boot into the live mint install CD and install testdisk/photorec there.
Mount your data partition as ReadOnly. then use test disk to recover files.

Now i just have Hard disk without any patition. Its size is 625GB.

So you wiped out your Windows 7 partition and installed Linux Mint over it? Can you either run "sudo gparted", find your drive, and then screenshot?

If you wiped it out, there are some data recovery tools that you can use. Please know that it may NOT be able to recover them.

Try giving this a try: TestDisk. It is a Linux application. Install it. I think Linux Mint should have it in its repository so you can use its built-in package manager to install it without having to compile and build it yourself. Again, there's no guarantee that it will work, but worth a try. You may be able to recover some data. Better than none if it works out.

No, you have not yet lost your data. When you format your drive it just changes the partition table allowing you to write over what is there. Unless you have physically written over the data it is still there and mint probably used the same space as where you windows was installed and your data is still there. Think of it like a cassette tape where you've taped over the slot that prevents you from accidentally writing over the recording of your wedding. Reformatting took the tape off and you've only overwritten the first few minutes.

Use testdisk with your mint install disk. Also photorec is part of test disk and will probe deeper. Always save to another drive! You wouldn't want to save the speech by your aunt Helen only to overwrite your vows.

If you have the same problem then the solutions already given apply.

If you have a different problem it would be better to start a new thread. (In fact that would be better in any case than reviving an old thread.)
