R9 290 VRM-1 Temps Too High!

Hello,

Yesterday I installed a Gelid Icy Vision Rev.2 to my Reference R9 290!

The installation was tricky but my Core temperatures and VRM2 temperatures have gone down a lot, the core never goes above 60 degress and VRM2 never goes about 65 degrees.

My problem is VRM2 - It easily gets to 100 degrees under load.

I installed the short, tall heatsinks on the VRM2 strip.

Why is it so hot, and how can I prevent this?

Thanks,
Thomas.

Solution

Not necessarily. 100 degrees may seem quite hot to us, but it is a warm afternoon breeze to electronics. Bringing it down certainly won't hurt and may extend the lifespan of the VRM itself by a little bit but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Make sure that you installed the heatsink on the MOSFETs rather than the inductors though.

But surely running them at 100 degrees for continual use will affect the card?

Thanks,
Thomas :D

Sounds good!

I installed the heatsinks on the MOSFET's with Arctic Allumina Epoxy - It should be okay

Thanks for the reassurance!

Thomas.
