Hello and thank you in advance for any assistance you provide. I have a custom built computer I am trying to upgrade to get some playable gaming out of. It has a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5800+ 3.0ghz cpu, MSI k9n6pgm2-v mobo, and currently 4GB (2x2). One memory stick is Avant 2gb ddr2 800mhz and the other is Adrenaline 2gb ddr2 800mhz. The new ram I bought is two sticks of Wintec 4gb ddr2 667mhz. I know my mobo is compatible with 8gb of ram and only has two slots so it cant be too much per slot. I know it is compatible with 667mhz ram, and the option is in my bios I have tried leaving the setting on "auto" as well as setting it to "667" and turning off and putting in the new ram and restarting (this was terrifying as I was not sure if I would get the computer to start again with the 800mhz ram if it didnt work, it didnt work and the computer did start with the old ram luckily.) When I put in the new ram it always does the same thing no matter what, powers on kind of, and the fans spin up like its trying to start but then they stop after a second, then spin up for a second stop for a second and just repeats this over and over. Nothing displays on the screen and there is no way to get to bios, it just wont start. I hope I have provided all the needed information if not let me know, and thank you again for any help.

I would say tha you need to get a matched pair of 800mhz sticks. You actually down clocked your memory which would not help your performance at all. You can run 8gb IF you are running a 64bit OS. I suspect you are running a 32 Bit os and 4 Gb is max, no matter how much you put in there.

Hi and thanks for replying. My old ram which is the unmatched set, works just fine, I have no issues with that only with the matched set. And yes I suppose the clock speed is lower but I find it hard to believe 8GB 667 is worse than 4GB of 800. And yes I do have 64bit windows 7.

Thank you for helping. I also am not terribly knowledgeable here, I dont know if that is or could be an issue or how to find out. But maybe someone else will know. Thanks.

Do you have the latest BIOS? If so, try resetting the CMOS then try 1 stick in slot 1 and go to BIOS, make sure the freq, timings and DRAM voltage are correct, save exit, shutdown. Then try adding the second stick and see, if no joy, may have to add a bit of voltage to the CPU/NB which is your MC (memory controller) voltage

Im afraid it was simple user error, It was apparently SIMM memory and not DIMM. makes me a DIMM-wit for not realizing my mistake lol thanks for the help.
