I just finished my new build and have a question regarding RAM. I started with 4GB just to stay within budget, and my intentions are to upgrade to 8GB in the future. I have two 2GB corsair vengeance rams in my Asus H97 Plus motherboard. If I want to upgrade to 8GB, is it better for me to buy two more 2 gb sticks, or get ride of the sticks I have in now, and buy two 4GB sticks? If I have 4 sticks will each pair run in dual channel?

Four 2 GB DIMMs will run just fine in dual-channel mode.

2x4GB will be less stressful on the motherboard memory controller so that is slight more optimal, but very slightly. How big of a difference depends on what you use the build for. If it's gaming, very little.

The answer is that they MAY work. Mixing RAM is never a good idea but if you go that route, the best way is to try it and see.

I would play safe and sell those you have and get 2x4, certified dual channel kit.

what do you mean by mixing ram? I would be buying two more of the exact sticks I have now.

That would be the best bet but they're not tested to work together and therefore, they is no guarantee. So it's still mixing them. But buying the exact same ones would have the best result in them working out.

As Ksham said, their is no guarantee, if you have any problems, give me a shout, can often make minor timing and/or voltage adjustments to get them to play
