So the questions i need answered are really, will my CPU bottle neck either of the cards? Will my system be able to run these cards? Does the VRAM amount matter a lot? And will i be able to play most games at high settings for the next 2 years? Or should i just wait for the new cards these companies put out? Or would i be better off buying the 770 or the 280. I mainly game at 1080p and would like to be able to play all these new and upcoming games at high to ultra settings. Really what i want from a card is flexibility and longevity since i'm laying around $500 on the table. I was also wondering if you guys think the Mantle API will make a big difference?

Both cards are equal in performance overall. For 1080p you may find the GTX 780 having a few more fps than R9 290. At 1440p, the R9 290 will push ahead. Mantle won't really make much difference yet.
2-3Gb is still good for 1080p.
No, your cpu won't bottleneck the GTX 780 or R9 290.
These cards are meant to max all settings at ultra for 60fps.
The GTX 770 and R9 280X is more for reaching max settings with some extra features toned down like Antialiasing, reflections shadows etc...

Yes laying $500 is something to think about since "4k" is been pushed. It is pretty difficult to estimate if AMD and Nvidia will release a single GPU that can be capable of 4K gaming yet but it is coming.

GTX 780 is better, And if you're playing on 1080p you should get 2Gb, And yes the amount of vram matters, 1Gb is enough for 720p, 2Gb is enough for 1080p, And if you got a good deal on GTX 780 2gGb GDDR5 it would better then a DDR3, But it still good, And this card has amazing performance, And yes it can run most of games on Ultra 1080p without any problems like BF4 this card kill it on solid 60fps, That's my opinion, Good luck! :)
