right now i have an amd phenom II x4 965 black edition at 3.4ghz. i was thinking i might upgrade it soon to a 6 core or even an 8 core. im looking for one that is good and and fast but wont cost an arm and a leg. im on a budget of around 150 i dont really want to spend more than that ive seen a few of the FX processors and i cant really decide between one. Im not really in to over clocking. any suggestions on a good one i should look into?
thank you :)

and how big of a diffrence does it make from the 6 core and 8 core in games like wise?

What mobo do you have? Because in order to fit a FX 8350 or FX 6300 in a old mobo you need to make sure it even can do it.

The difference between the 6300 hexa core and fx 8320 octo core is enough to tell a difference. Because both aren't true 8 core cpus, sure they have 8 physical cpus but it takes 2 of those cpus to run floating point workloads where as it only takes one to run integer workloads.

This gets into the nitty gritty of how cpus work, look up Buldozer AMD in Wikipedia to get further info.

will your motherboard support either of your prospects?

If you have a decent enough motherboard to run a fx 8350, you can get a 8320 and overclock it to 8350 speeds. Just a suggestion.

But yes, like techy said, it depends on your motherboard. I'm sure if you can support a phenom, and if the motherboard has a bios update for the fx series chips, a 6300 would fit in there without too many problems.

my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H its kinda an old one and im sure the FX processors would work with it. and i didnt know if those added cores would improve gaming much at all i do some video editing and some animation rendering but mostly gaming

The fx series chips aren't listed under supported CPUs.

on a page I read it said supports new 6core processors.............. which at that time was the 1090t 1045, etc. not sure if it supports the 6300 or 8300 series. better look into that.

gigabyte and other board manufacturer sites are starting to make it hard to easily find data.

i wasnt sure if it would i just guessed it did because the motherboard has a AM3 socket and the FX processors are AM3+ kinda figured they were the same or very similar and could fit into it but i will look into it

the extra cores wont help gaming much outside of certain exceptions like BF4 and Crysis 3. Until DX 12 comes around at least because that should utilize however many cores you have.

For rendering on the other hand the 8 core FX will go miles ahead of 6300. But as stated before your motherboard doesnt support FX chips (other than the 4130 which would be a downgrade).

now you are at the point where you are considering a new motherboard and a new cpu. If youre on windows 7 that might mean needed a new copy of the OS too as its tied to the original mobo (OEM version only).

Consider the total amount youre willing to spend, depending on how much you want to spend a Xeon might fit your wants and needs better. On a tighter budget an AM3+ board paired with an FX 8320 or 8350 WILL be better than an i5 for the rendering. The i5 will have the FX beat for gaming (until DX 12 comes out at least).

SO what matter more to you?

i mostly game so rendering videos and stuff isnt as important to me. im more into gaming and that matters more to me. I mean like my processor isnt a bad one. it still kicks ass but thinking its a little outta date. but i might turn around a look into a new mobo because theres all the new USB 3.0 and PCIe 3.0 and my board is at 2.0. think ill look into some new mobos soon before i get a new CPU

you shouldn't make you decision on usb ports or 2.0/3.0 pci-e. doesn't mean that much. .............. you should figure out what you need and what the board will support and where the future goes.

usb 3.0 is a nice touch if you have usb 3.0 compatible devices. my 360 controllers and a lot of other things actually wont work with usb 3.0 so sometimes 2.0 is nice. pci 3.0 is not needed, the 2.0 lane hasnt even been fully saturated yet 3.0 is just there for when we finally get there. i cant imagine any card that needs 3.0 pci or sees huge gains over 2.0 lanes.
