How do I get Doom 3 BFG Edition to run on Windows 8 64-bit?

I have an AMD 6 core FX-6200 system running Win 8 x64 w/10 GB RAM. I have a Radeon 7570 graphics card. I thought (obviously mistakenly) that since the recommended OS, per Steam, is Win 7 x64 that Doom BFG Edition might run on my Win 8 x64 system. Is there a patch or fix that will allow it to run? The game makes to the first "Loading" screen for the first level and then I get a Windows error message that says the game has stopped working. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Doom 3 BFG Edition works just fine on my Windows 8.1 PC. There was an issue with the OpenGL library shipped with some versions of the AMD Catalyst drivers which would cause the game to fail to load. I believe that this problem crept up around...

Doom 3 BFG Edition works just fine on my Windows 8.1 PC. There was an issue with the OpenGL library shipped with some versions of the AMD Catalyst drivers which would cause the game to fail to load. I believe that this problem crept up around Catalyst 13.4 (prior versions were unaffected) and was resolved around 13.11. I'm running Catalyst 14.6 beta without issue.
