I built my current computer in November of last year specifically to play video games. Since the day I turned it on, it's had this strange problem. Whenever I turn it on after a long period of inactivity (usually any time over an hour), it will run just fine for about 10 or 15 minutes, then it will start incessantly lagging every couple seconds. The video freezes up and the audio makes a weird whirring noise; the best way I can describe it is that my computer has an awful case of the hiccups. Every time this happens, all I have to do is restart the computer and it works perfectly fine until the next time I start it up.

This hasn't bothered me all that much before, but now it's really getting to me. If I'm playing a game when these "hiccups" occur, there's a fairly good chance that restarting my computer will completely wipe whatever save information I have for that game. It doesn't wipe the data every time, but in the last 8 months I've lost all progress for 3 of my games; two of these instances happened just this past weekend.

I've put this under the Storage thread, but truthfully I have no idea what it could possibly be, whether it's a bad installation or faulty hardware or what. My best guess is that it's something to do with either my SSD or my hard drive; the SSD being where my OS is running and the HDD being for my games and everything else. When my computer parts came in the mail, the hard drive came in an unmarked cardboard box with no packaging or instructions of any kind, which struck me as odd since all the other parts came in big shiny boxes with packets and instructions and such. I'm planning on replacing it to see if it fixes anything, but I'd like some input on what could be the cause of this.

Specs:

Motherboard: ASRock z77 Extreme 4
CPU: Intel i5-3570k @ 3.40 GHz
OS: Windows 7
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series (For Operating System)
HDD: Barracuda 1TB
RAM: Not too sure, all I know is that it's Corsair 8 GB.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

That is a strange problem. It may be the result of a virus of some sort. I would recommend scanning for viruses first. You can try restoring your computer to an earlier restore point.

The lagging and audio/video issues that you refer to may me a driver issue. I would try uninstalling the drivers using a utility like DDU. Then reinstall the latest graphics driver for your GPU.

Another possible fix would be clearing the CMOS or reflashing the BIOS. And lastly you can try a fresh install of the operating system.

Thanks for the suggestions terry, I'm relatively new to troubleshooting and I had no idea there were so many methods to choose from. I've done a scan for viruses and ran DDU on my system, so far my computer's running okay but I'll have to give it a couple days to make sure the problem doesn't come back. Greatly appreciated!
