Will two HD Radeon 6870s drive a 4k display?

I'm upgrading to the Asus 28inch 4k display for productivity and gaming. My computer is currently running Window 8.1 and I have two AMD Radeon HD 6870s running in Crossfire. I know that I definitely won't be running anything on ultra with this setup but will my current graphics solution run at least borderlands 2 or something of that nature or will I have to upgrade to a new graphics card right off the bat?

Furthermore, when I do upgrade (be it now or a short bit down the line) what graphics card should I opt for? I would like to spend less than $600. Will an R9 290 be sufficient or do I have to go for a 290x/GTX 780 or, heaven forbid, 780 Ti/Titan?

EDIT:Thread title.

EDIT 2:Thanks for the tips. I've decided that the performance of my two 6870s isn't gonna cut it and I'm going to go for a reference r9 290. The reason I'm choosing a reference card is that I will be liquid cooling my entire rig soon. This will allow me to over clock and get 290x comparable performance while maintaining a cool chassis.

I'm sure you've already looked at some, but here's some benchmarks at 4k.

Your two 6870s are going to perform similar to one 270, but the bigger problem will be if they are 1GB cards. If they're 2GB cards you might get lucky and be able to run some newish games on medium, but 1GB I doubt even that is going to happen.

4gb of vram would be enough for me to play without worrying about the frames, 3gb looks alright too, and when I say alright for 3gb of vram I mean 25-40 FPS assuming your CPU isn't bottlenecking you. I would buy a 4gb card if I were you, you won't be playing every game at 60fps but hey it will be in 4k and it will be enjoyable.
