Large download via VPN failing. Unsure why.

Hi all,

I'm attempting to download a game via VPN tunnel (provided by 'StrongVPN' http://www.strongvpn.com/ ).

The tunnel is from my IP in London, UK to Strong VPN's tunnel node in Tokyo, Japan.

I'm using the tunnel since the game demands a Japanese IP for interaction with the website and downloader.

The problem I'm encountering is that during the download of the game (via the game's patcher program) the download occasionally stalls for 10 seconds or more resulting in a 'time out' and the abandoning of the download attempt, whereby the patcher starts over from 0%.

Since this is a 20GB download this is obviously an unacceptable scenario.

I'm wondering what I can do to improve the integrity of the connection and reduce the likelihood of there being no download traffic for anything more than 10 seconds, which is the 'time out' window for the download.

I can provide further, more specific information on how the game's patcher works at your request. I'm uncertain whether it works on a torrent principle or connects directly to a set FTP server. The patcher has a configuration text file though I'm not experienced enough to interpret it. I can link if there are those who could - at your request.

Without going into too much detail it's necessary that I use the Japanese version of the game rather than a localised variety, otherwise I would have switched to a European/American client long ago. :)

Incidentally the StrongVPN client allows me the option of PPTP, SSTP or L2TP protocols. I'm not sure if any of these would help the download rate's stability and integrity, however.

While I doubt it, I'm also running a firewall on my router and the PC itself. I have tried disabling both with no real improvement.
