I am planning on upgrading my gpu and monitor. I am going to be getting an Asus VG248QE. I need a gpu to go alongside this monitor, but I am not sure which one to buy. I am between the r9 290/290x and gtx 780/780ti. I want my system to be future proof as I will have these for awhile so that is why I am considering the 780 ti and 290x, but if the 780 or 290x will be fine for a few years, that is fine.

well that totally depends on you... obviously a better card, is better... the 290x is equivalent of 780, and 780 ti is about 10% stronger than 780... whichever card you get out of these 4 will be an amazing deal, they are all very powerful cards and can drive any game at ultra settings...

so my suggestion would be, decide whether you want to pay more and get a stronger card, and decide which one yo like more and take it...

future proof is kind of a fuzzy term... lets say now you can run games on ultra, in a year you will be able to run them at high or very high and so on... and it all goes down to ones personal perception... it goes without saying that this card will run games 3 years from now, even 5 years from now, but at what...

The amd series will run hotter, that will mean you wont be able to over clock as much while they will be faster.
The Nvidia series is alot cooler and will be alot more capable to overclock. I would only recommend the 780 ti and 290x for higher resolutions. Not 1080p ;9. And sorry to say, nothing is '' future proof '' but the 780 and 290 will last long :).
