Is this build good for these uses? I know the psu is overkill but he might upgrade in the future.

Solution
- Given the professional applications and that he wants to game, you may want to get a Titan Black rather than dual 780Ti's. You lose out on gaming performance, but like mentioned above unless he is running a beastly display setup its not that big a deal. The amount of GPU grunt that a Titan Black brings over a 780Ti (singular, SLI doesnt scale to my knowledge) in compute workloads is pretty hefty.
- Go for a 4x4GB kit, you want quad channel memory on X79 systems. Though with my Titan Black recommendation, could afford to get a 4x8GB kit.
- Thats a $3000 system and your going to put it in a tacky looking $70 case :shake:. If you want to save cash here, get a Phanteks Enthoo Pro, its a respectable looking full-tower for about ~$120, that...

- Dont get a single large HDD, get multiple drives. For the price of that 3TB, you could get dual 2TB's Seagate Barracudas, which is another TB of storage and now he has RAID options. Even in a JBOD, you now have your data split over two drives so you lose less if a failure happens and performance just inherently is going to be better if he manages where his working data is kept.

I know the psu is overkill but he might upgrade in the future.

To what? You'v pretty much hit the ceiling for a consumer system with that rig. An 850W would do fine for dual cards, no reason for more.
