Hey guys, I am a dota 2 livestreamer who would like to squeeze more performance out of my 8 core CPU.
So any ways on how to increase my FPS (with detailed explanations) would be nice. Also, some information on how to disable cores and how much it boosts performance would be appreciated.
(I have a AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor 3.5GHz if that wasn't clear through the title)

Thanks in advance!

Too squeeze performance out of your 8320, try overclocking (a quick Google search will help you fine the answer). I wouldn't recommend disabling cores if you're streaming though as it wouldn't yield an FPS increase.

Update: Here's a guide for you.

Thanks for the reply Bluuue. I overclock it with AMD Overdrive but I can't OC it much without having stuttering/rubberbanding in my performance. Why would disabling cores not help (since I dont believe that all cores are being efficiently used)? I would imagine that having fewer active cores, you could further overlock the cores that are active. Please do get back.
Also, thanks for the guide!

This pretty much explains why you shouldn't disable cores:
Not worth it rlly, if u wanted a quad core then shoulda spent the money for an i5 or the 4300 lol. The fx cpus are actual 8 cores, but theres 4 modules with 2 fpu cores that share resources and this sharing of resources if disabling the shared cores would increase performance for those cores but having 8 cores with shared resources etc is better than 4 cores with dedicated resources etc

I wouldn't recommend overclocking via software as it's unreliable. You don't know if the settings you put in the program are going to be the same as the BIOS. That said, just overclock via your BIOS much less risks involved.

I also recommend NOT using Overdrive as anything other than a monitor.....and its not that great at that either. You want to overclock in the BIOS.

I also agree not to disable cores. The strength of the FX-8320 is its 8 cores. Getting them up into the 4+ GHz range is where they really start to come alive and you can get some really good performance out of them. Go to Overclock.net and check out their AMD CPU section. There are several Piledriver overclocking threads and tutorials there. Do some reading and get to it. Its a lot of fun actually and its a great way to get a lot of extra performance out of your chip.

You didnt mention what CPU cooler you had but youll want a good one. FX chips can really crank out the heat so youll need something pretty beefy. A Corsair H80i, Noctua D14 or better would be the minimum Id want if youre planning on overclocking into the mid 4's. If youre just wanting a light boost up to maybe 4.0 then a Cooler Master Hyper 212 will work and cost only $30.
