can't see my files

hi i have stored my data in external hdd now i can't see the files in my hdd but the when i connect to my laptop its show size of hdd used but when open it there no files. plz suggest

open up windows explorer and told down alt then tools and folder options then click on view then show hidden files.

i don't know why the files would be showing up hidden but that may be 1 solution.

whats the file system? are you different a mac going to a pc or vice versa?
