Hi.

I have a HP 2000-453CA Notebook PC. The Hard Drive failed and I am going to replace it soon. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. I used a friends disc to upgrade.

I do not have recovery discs and I do not have the instillation disc that I used to upgrade to Windows 8.

How can I reinstall the os on the new hard drive if I don't have any recovery or installation discs.

I heard Windows 8 stores the Product Key in the BIOS, and it will automatically use it to activate Windows.

If that's true, is it possible to install an iso version of windows 8 and put it on a usb/dvd and install it from there?

Thanks.

Then you're kinda screwed. No license for the Win8, and no license for the original 7.

Plus which, you cannot use your friends license key on your machine if he is also using it on his. 1 license, 1 PC at a time.
Time to buy one for yourself.

Upgrade - If you, for instance, have Windows 7 installed, you can generally buy an 'Upgrade' license. Cheaper, but it requires that the previous OS is installed. It also invalidates the previous Windows 7 license.

Full install - Can be installed on a bare drive.

In either case, a valid license key is required.
