Reinstall Windows 8 on a New Hard Drive

Hi.

I have a HP 2000-453CA Notebook PC. The Hard Drive failed and I am going to replace it soon. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. I used a friends disc to upgrade.

I do not have recovery discs and I do not have the instillation disc that I used to upgrade to Windows 8.

How can I reinstall the os on the new hard drive if I don't have any recovery or installation discs.

I heard Windows 8 stores the Product Key in the BIOS, and it will automatically use it to activate Windows.

If that's true, is it possible to install an iso version of windows 8 and put it on a usb/dvd and install it from there?

Thanks.

hmmm...

It was originally 7, then you upgraded to 8.1. What you're trying to do will not work.
Was going to 8.1 an 'upgrade' license or a full install? (it makes a difference)

I think it was a full install, but I'm not sure. By the way, I upgraded to windows 8, not 8.1.

OK...if it was a full install, you have the license key? It is only stored in the BIOS for an OEM installation. Such as direct from HP or Dell.

What is the difference between "upgrade" licence and a full install? I installed windows 8 from a instillation cd, so what would that be?

Upgrade - If you, for instance, have Windows 7 installed, you can generally buy an 'Upgrade' license. Cheaper, but it requires that the previous OS is installed. It also invalidates the previous Windows 7 license.

Full install - Can be installed on a bare drive.

In either case, a valid license key is required.

Oh, okay. It was an upgrade then, but I used a friends disk and he has it now and I don't have the product key.

Then you're kinda screwed. No license for the Win8, and no license for the original 7.

Plus which, you cannot use your friends license key on your machine if he is also using it on his. 1 license, 1 PC at a time.
Time to buy one for yourself.
