GRUB rescue when booting from internal hard drive

Hi all,

Recently I installed Kali Linux to an external SSD from a USB through my laptop. The setup went without errors, but now when I boot my laptop, it brings up the GRUB rescue prompt (saying it couldn't find a drive with a long name that looks like a Registry key). When I boot with the SSD plugged in, however, it brings up the GRUB loader, then continues to the Kali Linux boot screen. To boot to Windows 8.1, I have to go to the Kali boot screen and select "Boot Windows 8.1 ...". The name of the internal HDD is Windows 8 (C:\). I would like to be able to launch Windows 8 without having to have the SSD plugged in through a USB port.

Thanks,

Tommy.

Than you probably shouldnt have installed Kali as a dualboot but rather as a normal boot using the funtion key to select the boot device during the post process.

Have you tried making the win8 hdd the primary boot device in Kali? I suspect you will still get the error but it may still boot win8 after.
