How (Relatively) Future Proof is This Build?

Intel i5-4690k 3.5GHz Processor

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H Motherboard

Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory

Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB Tri-X Video Card

I understand that no build is truly "future proof" but how long could I be playing games on Medium to High settings at AT LEAST 30 FPS, preferrably 45 or 60?

I think you first bottleneck will be your cpu, but that is my opinion. That graphics card will last a long time, and like mentioned above if you add another card in down the road then way longer. As more and more games use more RAM you may have to add another stick if you are into strategy games like total war that use 3gb+ for one session. Lucky for you intel sockets don't seem to change much so if your cpu does bottleneck you can upgrade to an i7 or whatever is the newest, and it will most likely fit that mobo without issues. Also maybe look into overclocking when things get slow. Your hardware will be older then, and it might be the boost it needs to push it another year or two until the next generation comes along.

Let's think the other way.
The GTX 580 was released back around end 2011/start 2012, and it will still play games like Watch Dogs on high settings, while having 1,5 gb of vram.
It was seen at the time of release one of the best video card out there, just like the r9 290x is seen today.
I think your r9 290x will hold up the same way as the gtx 580 did, while the 290x still has more than enough vram for the next couple years at least.
