Hello,

Recently, I bought a server (Dell PowerEdge SC1425), it's got dual xeons (64 bit, one core, 3 ghz), 2GB Ram, and 80GB HDD.

What game-servers can this handle?

I'm thinking about source servers, minecraft servers, maybe an ArmA server, what can it handle? Thanks.

Mahjong, probably minesweeper. Seriously: it handles less then any cheap modern PC, is horrible noisy and the power consumption is horrible.

Really? Some people are saying it can handle Minecraft no problem, is it really that bad?

I'm not too familiar with hosting game servers but to put things into perspective - that model is 7-8 years old.

Hardware requirements depend how many people will be using your server but I do think this machine will struggle with anything significant.

Also, this might help you for minecraft. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Server/Requirements#Runn...

Could I upgrade it somehow? If so, what can I upgrade (and is it worth it)?

Well, I would say it's not worth it. You would need to add some RAM to it for running virtually anything useful. The problem is you need to get Registered ECC DIMMs for it. Crucial says an 8GB upgrade for that model is $285. So immediately you can see the problem - the cost is very high for it versus a cheap, new system you can put together today where 8GB of DDR3 can go for $75.

So, no, I wouldn't say it's worth it.

You don't have any realistic options CPU wise either. There are a couple of dual-core chips that should be compatible and would get you to quad-core. However they have 32-bit instruction sets so you would be limited to a 32-bit OS which in turn limits you to 4GB of RAM.

I have the sc1435 which is the newer model and a 1850 of similar time. Providing your Network can support it you could probably get about. 25 player mine fact server using an ubuntu server os regarding Arma it would be about 10 but it really depends on your provider I have 6gb server in a data centre and I can get about 60 players but I do have a large os and back ground applications but it's because it has a good upload I can get that. If you have your standard 2-6mb upload your going to get about 10 mine raft 5 Arma if that
