I discovered that the computer that is used to complete sales with at our restaurant has experienced a motherboard failure, and am looking to purchase one of eBay and replace it. Now I've heard that self-replacing a motherboard causes Windows to freak out and asks to activate the computer again. The most important piece of software on this computer is the Aldelo program which keeps track of all the menu items, sales records, and receipt printing. Is it possible to call Microsoft and ask of them to activate the computer to be used again? Keep in mind this is Windows XP, not any of the newer versions. If somebody has any other better advice, please respond!

Thank you.

For a broken and replaced motherboard, yeah, probably reactivation is OK.
If you get the exact same board a reinstall probably won't be needed.

However, the far more troubling aspect is....why is there not a backup of this critical business data?
This time, the motherboard died. Next week, that hard drive dies. Then what?

Yes, I realized this a while back, and following the motherboard replacement, we will surely back up the data needed as often as possible. Thankfully this was not a major issue in which all our data was lost.

So after replacing my motherboard, and starting up the computer again, I hear a POST beep of 1 long and 2 short beeps. Apparently it is a video adapter error, which also seems to be connected to another issue with the motherboard. I tried resetting the CMOS and replacing the RAM, but it does not fix the problem. The monitor it is connected to is also blank. The computer is an old Thinkcentre 8183-DBU, basically a Thinkcentre S50.
