Current running:

  • AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
    2x4gb Corsair Vengeance @ 1333mhz
    GTX 760
    MSI 970A-G46 motherboard

Considering if I should make the swap over to Intel and pick up
an I74790k for the $279 at microcenter and the ASUS Maximus VII Hero.
Con would be that I'd have to swap motherboards and if at that point would it
be worth it ?
Pro would be that I'd have spare parts to make a second pc.

Or simply upgrade to an 8350.

Things I do on my PC?
I run dual monitors and generally play games while watching anime or twitch.
Games include:

  • Wildstar
    ESO
    WOW
    CSGO
    LOL
My wife does photo editing.

Initially I think getting the 4790k would be future proofing myself from have to upgrade again

Solution

If your gaming I'd go with a haswell upgrade, you will get a at least 3 years of life on it then you can pop a Broadwell cpu in which will last you another 2 years (just make sure you get a mobo with a 9 series chipset.
Upgrading is only worth it if your 1100T isn't performing up to par in the applications that you use. In most instances a Haswell CPU would be a noticeable upgrade, but not necessarily all instances.

An FX-8350 would mostly be a sidegrade, not really worth it, unless you use applications that utilize the newer instruction sets and two more integer cores (minus two FPUs).

Updated initial post.
Also as far as budget its fine,
Just wondering if the 4790k would push out more performance now and in the future that would make it
worth the extra $280 or so

A 4790K and Asus Z97 hero would be awesome.

The old "bulldozer" refresh chip from 2012... not so much. Unfortunately AMD has abandoned the enthusiast. Although on the low end, some of their new APU's are interesting.

My 1100T has a few broken pins but has been running none the less.
But in the back of my mind I wonder if its bottlenecking me more anything

I don't know what you call it, but Intel hardware is dam long lived.
Look at the 2500K(early 2011)... even today you likely would bother upgrading, not enough of a performance jump. Let alone an Ivy or early Haswell CPU.

If you're big on MMOs, you'll be happier with going top-tier, so the i7-4790k or the i5-4690k are your best bets. I'd say the i5-4690k under normal circumstances but since your wife does photo editing, if it's heavy photo editing she'll appreciate the i7 more I believe. In terms of gaming the i5 and i7 are mostly identical in terms of performance.

I'd say stay far from AMD. As much as I love AMD, their CPUs are fairly lackluster. In fact, your Phenom still beats most of AMDs current performers in a lot of ways, specifically in floating point performance. IIRC, Phenoms were the last line of AMD CPUs to sport physical cores. AMDs current line of FX CPUs only sports logical cores and have lots of shared resources, which is not going to get you as much horsepower if you were to compare their FX-6300 to your Phenom at the same clock. So the FX-8350 won't get you a great boost in performance either, as it effectively gives you 2 more ALUs over your Phenom but only two-thirds the number of FPUs. So yea, just stick with Intel. The i7-4790 will get you much greater performance overall in games hands down.

For gaming, the i7 really isn't worth it. Perhaps it's more future proof because of hyperthreading but ehh probably still not that future proof compared to the i5. The i7 may be more worth it if your wife does heavy photo editing, and even there, we're talking like heavy on the rendering and such for that to make a difference. The i5 is probably much more worth it. I also recommend you wait for microcenter to restock so you have to pay less of a premium. Either that or get an i5-4670k if you never plan on overclocking and you can't wait.

Yes that board will work. It's probably one of the best Z97 boards you can get. The i7 will do very nicely, particularly for editing. Otherwise I might have suggested dropping down to an i5-4690K, but both are excellent choices either way.
