Yes, you can use the 4 pin header with 3 pin fans. The 3 pin connector is 'keyed' to fit properly. But 4 pin headers are usually PWM speed controlled. your fans may run at full rpm all the time as a result.

You can use 3 pin on 4 pins and 4 pins on 3 pins. The way the fans go is you have the the two for power. One that monitors the speed of the fan and the 4th that can adjust it. This is why most PC's only have 1-2 4 pin fan headers because usually its just the CPU that use the 4 Pin most of the time.
