You have to let Windows update get the driver for you, and you can only install it if it is connected directly to your network via Cat-5 unless you have a USB-to-Parallel adapter, in which case you can use that.

I am soory - I am old and computer illiterate. I can follow directions, but don't know what Windows update is. I also don't know what 'Cat-5' and 'usb-Parallel adapter' are, let alone if I have them! Please elaborate. Thanks.

I found Windows Update but I don't see how to ask it to find my HP 6MP driver. It finds updates automatically, and the only ones available now are 8.1 updates. I don't see how to let Windows update get the driver!
Then go to the printers section of the control panel, add new, local, use existing port (USB001 probably) and when it asks for the driver have it search windows update (that's an option it will give).
No that doesn't work. It doesn't find this printer. I found out that the printer is old and not supported by Windows in 8 anymore. But it seemed to be in 7, so can I use a Windows 7 driver in Windows 8.1?
According to HP it is supported so long as you use the get-driver-via-windows-update method (I checked before even answering at first). And unfortunately you can't use the Win 7 driver. You may just need to buy a new printer.
I checked the HP website too and it doesn't list it as unsupported. Funny windows update doesn't find the driver. I wonder why not!? If it's supported it update should find it!
