Help me guess a psu's age?

I'm working on a computer right now, pretty much done with it. But given how my friend decided to build the thing - from spare parts - I'm looking to put together a basic hardware report on everything.

Most of the parts have been no issue, but I can't find a date on the psu.

He had got the computer, a Gateway something (Have forgotten the specific model, and he's changed so many things that tracking down the original model would be impossible) back in 2011 and it was on it's second psu. The first one I guess was replaced with a stronger model, but I've no idea on this second psu's age.

All I know is that it's a Antec Earthwatt's 500W psu. The only thing different about it to me is that it's a unpainted gray box. I've used a EW before, but it was the 380W model and it came in green.

It's a rough guess, but I'd put it at 4 1/2 years old, which would explain the issue he was having with it - Sudden crashes after installing 2 sata hdd's, the psu's capacitors are aged and it couldn't support extra drives - but this is just a rough estimate.

I'd test that more extensively, however he was 'nice' enough to switch the computer over to a new case and remove the dvd and bluray drives, and both secondary hdd's that were added. before I got a chance to look at it. So, given the HW changes I can't be certain that it's cap aging.

Well you could find out the model number and see when Antec started/stopped manufacturing that individual model, but that will be probably as close as it gets.

If you have determined that the PSU is giving the PC problems, when it does finally go out it's possible that it will damage other components with it. If you care about that system at all, you should probably invest in a cheap PSU and be done with it.

That's the issue - Some of the HW was removed, and the case swapped (with possible damage to the ide cable during it) before I had a chance to look over it, so I can't be sure if it is psu age that's doing it. A damaged ide cable would explain the issues with it as well, HDD-Sen is reporting a cable issue, but during the time I've had it here the computer hasn't crashed which brings me back to psu age.

I'd love to be able to test the supply, but I don't have a psu tester and I've already been knocked on my ass once by a psu so no way in hell am I going to try testing it manually with a meter.
