I was thinking about getting another monitor for my hp envy 1534 and I am not sure how to tell if my computer can support it or not. Also does it have any downsides to doing this? I have seen it where people have two monitors beside each other and they can make the mouse go from one screen to the other and bring up different pages on each screen. Which is what I am trying to do with my computer

If I am looking a the right model Hp Envy 1534, you are using a HD 7570. I believe that GPU can support multiple screens.

If your only web-browsing, working on spreadsheets, Microsoft-word, and/or other things that aren't computer intensive than there isn't much of a downside to this, except the cost of the extra monitor. Your going to be adding more work for the GPU, but the things listed above don't push the GPU very hard.
If you are a gamer, than the issues get a bit more complicated. Using a second+ monitor for gaming is adding to the total resolution. Which means that the GPU is going to have an increased work-load. High-end GPUs can handle this on some games at high-ultra. This card is by no means high-end though, and you will likely have issues trying to run games with two monitors.

I would only be using one screen for gaming and probably have the other one off while I game but still plugged up. So if I am gaming but have the second monitor off it should be fine right? What about using Netflix on one screen and then writing a paper or browsing the Internet on the other? Or playing a game on one screen and just browsing the Internet on the other.

I forgot to mention I upgraded my graphics card to the MSI GeForce GTX 660 N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC Video card. I'm sorry about that.

Ok, then what I said above still applies. But you may be able to pull off gaming on duel monitors, depending on the game. Gaming on two monitors isn't preferable as the reticule will be between the monitors. 3 monitors is what most people do when they want multi-monitor gaming. If all your doing is average computer work and maybe some light gaming, then your good to go.

But if I'm about to play a game like Battlefield 4 that is pretty demanding, then if I just turn the other monitor that I'm not using off and just use one monitor it will be fine? Or as long as I have two plugged in it doesn't matter if ones off or on?

Yeah. If you turn one monitor off then you won't have problems with extra load on the GPU. Just make sure the computer knows that the monitor is off. I.e. the computer isn't sending information to the off-monitor.
