its best off going with a h97 if u get a h87 u will need a bios update and not all boards are supported, u cant update a bios without a processor in it so its tricky. best stick with h97
I also have the exact same issue since i have already purchased the i7 4790. i was looking at these 2 boards:
1) msi h87 g43
2) msi h97 gaming 3
the h97 board costs more than the h87 board and goes beyond my budget. So im not sure what i should do now. Either go in for a lower end motherboard having a h97 chipset or the msi h87 g43.
just for your edification:
YESSSSSS!!!!!!
WELL TO ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION YES!!! THE ANSWER IS YES!!!!!!!
YOU CAN OVERCLOCK 4790K ON THE MSI H87-G43 EVEN UP TO BIOS 2.9 - SO TAKE THAT CHUMPS
SORRY TO BURST PEOPLE'S BUBBLE BUT YES THE ANSWER IS YES!!! YOU CAN OVERCLOCK ON THE H87 BOARDS [THE MSI H87-G43 (7816) ANYWAYS].. IF ANYONE'S TRYING TO STEER YOU AWAY FROM THIS THEY PROBABLY WORK FOR INTEL
ALL YOU DO IS USE THE SHIFT+THE "+" SIGN OR NO SHIFT AND THE MINUS SIGN AND YOU CAN GO ABOVE 40X YOU CAN EVEN GO UP TO 46 IN THE BIOS AND THE TURBO ON A 4790K GETS TURNED OFF (ALTHOUGH IT RUNS HOT ON THE STOCK COOLER ON A STRESS TEST) BUT OTHER THAN THAT YES!! YES IT WORKS... I NOW HAVE MY BRAND NEW i7 4790K RUNNING AT 4500MHZ/4.5GHZ ON STOCK VOLTAGE ON A LOWLY MSI-H87-G43 (7816) USED MOTHERBOARD OFF KIJIJI WINNIPEG.... I OVERCLOCKED A 4790K ON A $40 BOARD!!! HAWHAHWHAHWHAW TAKE THAT INTEL!!!
