Reformat it? That should erase whatever is on it from a functional point of view, although if the data is secret this will leave it recoverable.
What are you trying to do that you have to start over - if it's more complicated than just copying files, maybe we could help some more.

I need to backup my hard drive, per the Apple Genius, so they can wipe everything. Some of my apps are not working properly and they believe the solution is to wipe the hard drive (not a techie, so I don't know if I'm using the correct jargon). I have performed at least two other backups to the external, but it seems the Passport recopied data that already existed, instead of saving "new" data. This has resulted in not enough space being availlable for the backup I must perform now. I'm pretty confident that whatever is on my current hard drive is what I need, and nothing before that.
