Hello, I recently purchased a retail copy of mountain lion. I downloaded VMware 10 and extracted installed.DMG, converted it to an ISO and used it to boot. I formatted the virtual drive and started the installation process but after 6 to 10 minutes a message appear saying:"can't download the additional components required to install mountain lion". What should I do?

Solution
OS X isn't supported on VMWare; it isn't supported on anything other than a Mac. It will however run on VMWare Fusion on a Mac. So that's your best bet.

That doesn't mean that you can't make it work on a PC, but you'll need to do a deal of research and you won't get any support from Apple. I suggest that you look at specialist Hackintosh web sites and post a question in their forums. One hint - they will probably want a few details about your hardware and software setup before you will get any help.

Same problem as with VMWare. It might work, it might not. It all depends upon your hardware and how much work you are prepared to do. I have managed to get OS X running in both VMWare and VirtualBox, but it was very slow and unstable - and easily broken by OS updates.

If you really want to run OS X on a PC then do a native install on hardware that is known to work and still be prepared to do a lot of research. If you want an easy, stable way to run OS X then buy a Mac. That way you would even get support for the OS.

The bottom line remains that OS X is not supported, and not guaranteed to run, on anything other than an Apple Mac.
