Old Dell With Xp Wont Connect

I hooked up a old dell with windows xp. cleaned it up a bit, and opened google chrome, says oops! not connected, but it says im connected. i then tried internet explorer, and that was a no-go also. ive tried alot of things, new internet cord.. etc.. my gaming computer im on now is working fine along with my brothers. my mom needs this dell to work. please help! thanks...

check to see under network settings that the pc is not set to a fixed ip and dns sever. if it is make sure it check to auto dns and ip and then run a ip release and then a ip renew. if it wifi card try updating the drivers from a usb stick. also try the hard wired port on the pc.

Check out the proxy settings in Internet explorer too: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2289942

Also as smorizio said, make sure you are not using a static IP address/DNS server. Set XP to use a DHCP server (dynamic) instead. Then see if you can ping google.
Start -> Run -> type "CMD" then hit enter -> type "ping www.google.com" into the command prompt -> See if Google responds.
