Is formating good enough?

Very recently I just formatted my Desktop PC by inserting my Win8 disk, clicking the "custom/advanced" option instead of the "quick" option and on the menu I clicked "delete" on my drive and the little 100MB drive that windows always creates and then made the new 1 when prompted, then I formatted it. I did this because I was using a remote control software to allow sum1 to control my pc from their end (I thought it was virgin media, but they weren't, they had access for about 5 minutes until I realised they weren't from virgin media but for those 5 minutes, my screen was frozen and I couldn't see what they were doing. Is this format enough to get rid of anything they have done/downloaded like viruses or spyware to steal my details? Or does the format just make the space on the drive re-writable and not actually delete the data entirely and get rid of whatever they could have done? plz help, I am worried! I have reset my passwords for everything on my mum's laptop and cancelled my online banking. But I want to know if the format is enough or if there is a chance that a malware of some sort could have survived it and is there an additional course of action I should take?
