Computer Won't Turn On

Hi,
I have my custom build PC and I try to turn this thing on but it just won't turn on.
I have ASUS P5KPL motherboard and I don't know what power supply brand is. I purchased already custom built one.
It turned on and worked just fine until today.
I recently heard some weir power supply fan noise but I thought something was wrong with power supply. Yesterday I have notice that computer turns off during normal usage without any notice.
Today it doesn't want to even turn on. I see light on the motherboard and I have tried clearing CMOS. Pushing power button does nothing.
Is this motherboard problem or is it time for power supply replacement?

Here's the things you should check:
First, smell the psu. if it smells burnt you might have a dead psu.
try unplugging drives and external devices one by one, even usb or keyboard and mouse, anything.
recheck all internal cables,
try removing and putting back ram
try with another or without video card,
try other cables,
try another psu

if none of these work, you might have to try another motherboard, you can test cpu by switching it with a friend (make sure they're compatible. If you can get compatible ram, try it, maybe the ram is defect.

If none of these work including the cpu try, you can guarantee yourself a dead motherboard.

I have tried that troubleshooting first. I asked my friend and he told me to remove and unplug almost everything but still not booting up. My friend has Intel Core 2 extreem CPu on LGA 775 which I have the same so we have exchanged the CPU. Still not booting up. So lastly I have exchange the power supply with my friend's one. He had Corsair 750w power supply. After exchanging PSu, it turned on. So I'm thinking this is the problem with my PSU. I'm looking to buy Corsair 750w ATX PSU but it cost like $99.99. Should I get 750w one or lower watage will decrease the performance?

Lower wattage won't decrease performance. If your computer needs more power than the psu can distribute, then the power supply will either try to produce that until it breaks or the computer will shutdown. You say that you have a custom built PC so i'll assume you have a gaming machine. In that case, my hint for you is the following: get yourself a robust power supply. I would never, EVER buy a power supply cheaper than 100$ for a gaming rig; this is like putting a little car's wheels on a big truck, it just doesn't make any sense. Never forget that if you get yourself a decent gaming power supply, you'll be able to transfer it to your next gaming rig.

Cheers.

OK so I really had to use the computer today immediately so I went to Best Buy and picked up the Sesonic 450w PSU. I connected the plug the same way as the previous one. Computer seems like it's working but it turned off after a few seconds. I didn't heard POST beep though. So I opened the case and double check the connections and wires. This time I smell something burning on the actual motherboard? Did I just fried the motherboard? Do I need to garbage this motherboard? This is my second computer. I had custom built PC that had FoxCONN motherboard and overall better speced one. My friend wanted to use my computer and he touched something on the BIOS. After that, I didn't heard POSt beep and I have tried clearing CMOS. Removed all the components and still didn't work. I sent it to FOXCONN but didn't get any answer back. Took it to computer expert but his saying that motherboard is overheated and it's fryed. That was discontinued model. But now my second custom built that I purchased hads fried. This is so frost rating. I will just buy a shiny new Mac or PC instead of used custom built and wasting money like this. Or I will rather built my own custom built. Anyway my conclusion is my motherboard is done, right? Sorry for the long story.

If the motherboard smells burnt, that might be it. However, you said that you tried exchanging psu with a friend and the computer booted up afterwards so try it again, maybe it's really the psu and the one you bought isn't powerful enough and the smell comes from a fried psu. Try it again just in case.
