So, I got a 780 and I was curious how long it would last me at 1080p? I am happy to turn the settings down to a minimum of half medium half high later. How long would it last me if I am satisfied with these settings in the future?

It will last At least 5 Years minimum. I still have a GTX 580 that i gave to my brother and its still such a beast of a card on Ultra.

I seem to have lost my crystal ball...

But in all seriousness, 2 - 3 years is not inconceivable, longer than that I can't really say.
On average I've replaced my GFX every 2 - 3 years.

It all depends on the games you play, your current rig, etc.

On a side note, most of my GFX cards from after 2007 are all still alive in different rigs around in my family.

Bottom line is, if your rig is equal to or more powerful than the current generation of consoles, then you're going to be able to play the same titles for the same life-span.
For consoles that's usually about 6-8 years.

Hardware will significantly improve in this time of course, but will it render gaming on yours obsolete? Hell no.

On the plus side, things are FINALLY starting to take a turn for the optimization route, DirectX 12 and Mantle seem to be going head-to-head on this front. In a couple of years I fully expect to see far better software to hardware level simplicity.

As for hardware development in these years, it's anyone's guess. GPUs appear to be greatly slowing down their release cycle, although that may come as a result of the Digital Foundries die-size issue. I imagine 4K will significantly speed things up and cause manufacturers to put their bums into gear, but that's just a guess.

Personally I like this development. I like the idea of future gaming on low level hardware by whatever means necessary. OnLive gave us a brief glimpse of this, Nvidia are working on a similar method as is PlayStation Now. Whether or not network gaming will become a thing depends entirely on best-guess scenario.

Someone needs to go to the sea-side and pay that creepy old woman for a reading to get any definitive answers.
