Why has the R9 270 2gb video card gone up by almost $20? Also whats BitCoin mining?

Everyone's talking about mining and I have no idea what it is. I tried to look it up but I still dont understand. I saw the 270 for $150 by sapphire last month. When will it go down I wasn't ready to buy it then but I am now. They say prices went up because of mining and such.

Mining is just a way of getting bitcoins.
Your PC will be given some sort thing to do and if your computer can solve it, you get bitcoins in return.
People use graphic cards because it's faster than using a CPU alone
