Computer freezing/locking up under load......sometimes

For about a month now my computer has been locking up when under loads, but only sometimes. When it freezes, the monitors completely freeze (as if it were a screen shot) the mouse and keyboard stop responding, and all audio cuts out. The only way to get out is to reset the machine. It started to happen when playing payday 2 and having skype open, not either individually, and it still doesnt seem to happen when running just payday 2, but it does happen now with other games and skype, but not always. I have replaced the PSU, added additional cooling, and have updated/downgraded all the drivers and nothing seems to make a difference.

Today, I found something interesting. I downloaded FurMark to test the GPU and ran the "Burn-in benchmark 1920X1080 15min" that can be found on the menu. My computer ran fine during the bench mark, but within seconds of the benchmark ending, my computer froze. I restarted and ran the benchmark again, and the same thing happens. Any ideas to what could be causing the freezing?

Edit: I should mention that I have been monitoring my temps and I am confident that this is not due to overheating, Neither my CPU nor GPU temps peaked when the computer freezes. In addition, the additional cooling I mentioned above was a new heatsink/fan for my GPU. The new parts did reduce the temp on my GPU, but the problems still exist.

Could you explain to me how this would be cause by over heating? Like I said, it froze AFTER the GPU had been under stress, not during. In addition, I added a larger heatsink and fan to my GPU in an attempt to fix the issues and they have persisted,

Nope, like I said, it looks like a screenshot.

maybe its not the gu heatsink issue ...maybe its the cpu... remove the heatsink of the cpu and add new thermal paste to it..... hopefuly the problem will be solved

It started about a month ago. I havent had any blue screens. There was nothing major that I remember changing that could have caused it, I know that there were no hardware changes, and I dont think there were any major software changes.

I dont think its the CPU over heating. I ran Prime95 for a few hours without it freezing. Like I said, the way that I can consistently trigger it is by running a GPU stress test, but it freezes after the test, not during.

can you try with a different gpu just to be sure that your gpu isnt dying

My motherboard doesnt have an integrated GPU. Also, I ran memtest for 3 passes on all my ram with no issues, and 8 passes on the oldest sticks with no issues. Should I run it more?

no no...it jus means we are back to square one...... and my doubt is that the gpu has something to do with this....its integrity cant be tested through a software...you have to somehow use a spare gpu and test perform same tests that made you crash...that way you will know if the gpu has something to do with it..you have no other choice left :(

well, I just tested it with the GPU out of my family's computer and it didnt freeze. Looks like im gonna have to get a new GPU. Might as well upgrade while im getting a new one. Any suggestions for an upgrade from the geforce gtx 560 ti that isnt terribly expensive? I was thinking maybe the GTX 750 or 750 ti.

do you prefer nvidia or amd?

nvidia :-
pros: great gpus with low tdp making it cool and effecient

cons: lags begind when it comes to raw performance when compared to the rival

amd:-
pros: great high performance gpus delivering high frame rates and epic detail

cons: the tdp is too high when compared to its rival and therefore runs hot

750ti is a lower mid end gpu with OK performance... it rivals with amd r7 265x

Personally, I prefer nvidia. My main problem is that right now I dont really have the money to truly upgrade my GPU. I want to get one that will perform at least as well as my previous one, and it seems that the 750 ti is about there and at a price that I am comfortable with.
