I want to improve an older machine, an HP-Compaq D530 SFF, by putting this graphics card into it: http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-498.shtml

According to this site that will work:
http://hardandsoftgaming.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/upgra...

But the HIS website says that card needs a minimum PSU of 300W, and that machine's only puts out 185W.

If the card is being used only for DVDs, YouTube, Google Maps, never gaming or any 3D stuff, will that be enough, or will the PSU do a Chernobyl on me?

A HD 4350 based pc needs a good quality power supply 300W min. HP do not put good quality power supplies in their pc's.

Try it if you want. Just keep a fire extinguisher next to your pc. No - I'm not kidding.

you will be fine.. dont worry... the worst thing that will happen is your pc might crash an might need a restart... if that happens then you know you need a better psu

Thanks. I thought someone might say what SR-71 Blackbird said, but in this case it is worth it for good reasons. So the only question is will it work safely? I should have added that the machine has a 320GB WD hard drive, a DVD RW drive and a 1TB USB hard drive (Hitachi Touro), so it's not driving much.

no worries...it should work jus fine.. the hard drives and optin drives must pull under 30w while active...you will be fine

Thanks again. I have since found this Flash guy http://www.hisdigital.com/ConsultGraphicsScout/ and he agrees with you. The total power consumed by similar or more powerful boards is only a fraction of 300W. A PCI-e board with the same model code shows only 30W for the sort of thing I intend doing. So the fire-extinguisher recommended ;-) by one wit will not be needed. :-)
