My gaming box needs to be upgraded or replaced

I have a PC that I built about about 5 years ago that is starting to have problems running games in anything but low resolution. I need to figure out if I can get away with just upgrading my video card or if I'm going to have some other bottle necks that are going to get in the way.

Here is a list of the relevant components.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P45T-ES3G (this was added after my first motherboard died)
CPU: intel quad core Q9550 2.83Ghz
Video: NVIDIA geForce 9800 GTX+
Power suply 500w
8gb ram
Windows 7 64 bit

I guess the biggest question is whether the old Motherboard/processor will be able to handle upgrading to something like a geforce 760? or if I need to just bite the bullet and go all out.

To throw another wrench into the mix, the PC is running hot and will at some points overheat and shut down, though when it does start to overheat it starts beeping at me and I can usually drop out of the game before it fails. I'm suspecting that the processor just needs to be reseated with new thermal paste, just haven't done it yet since it wouldn't even run Mass Effect 2 in anything but the worst resolution.

If it's borderline whether I will benefit, I don't mind trying as long as I'm only buying components that could still be used if I needed to just build a new one.

Thanks for reading and answering my questions.

Solution
Get a after market cooler for the processor and redo thermal paste.
From there your fine seeing as it is a quad core cpu it shouldn't bottleneck a 760.
Your build just needs to run cooler and a better graphics card is all and when the cpu is feeling dated in say 2 years the card can carry over to your next build if you want.
Your good to go mate.
