PCI-E Ethernet card not compatible?

MB: MSI E350IA-E45 (AMB APU)
Recent storm destroyed the Ethernet port (plus the modem/router). I bought a USB wifi dongle (and another modem/router) - everything was perfect. I decided the 300 Mbps of draft n wasn't fast enough so I bought a PCI-E Ethernet adapter (1000 Mbps).
I plugged it in the computer - nothing. No light on the card or the router port, no device seen in OS, no network.
I plugged it into another computer; as soon as I booted I saw a short message saying something like "Press something to configure lan boot" - obviously the card was working (even before the post screen)
I plugged another PCI-E card into the first computer (sata raid thing) - works like a charm.

So: the PCI-E port works, the card works but not together.

Is it possible that the lightning broke something on the MB that doesn't allow it to use Ethernet anymore (in any form). I know it sounds weird but I'm out of ideas.

Please help! Thanks in advance!

Update: I left the computer running overnight and in the morning I touched the Ethernet card - warm. So it's getting power but no activity and no LED lights.

It's possible that the PCIe port may have fried a few pins. Some of these pins may be used by the network card, but not used by the raid card. Power fluctuations can do odd things to electronics. In the future, you may want your computer on a battery backup or a line conditioner in order to prevent power problems.

In these case there were no "power fluctuations". There was a (night) storm with lightning so often there was almost no dark period. And I stupidly stayed outside watching it instead of unplugging everything in the house. Then one fell two houses over - loud bang outside, loud "crack" sound inside the house. Lesson learned!

Getting back to the topic, it looks like there's no way for me to use that card. Anyone has any experience with USB3 Gigabit Ethernet adapters?
