how can i set hp inkjet 6600 to print in black only when color cartridges empty?

can i alter settings on hp inkjet 6600 printer to be able to print in black ink only, especially when message on printer says color cartridges must be replaced before printing at all, even in black?

This question comes up pretty often, no you can't. Although it would make sense if you only need one color or no color, the inkjet vendors do not allow you to print once the ink runs out. Partly it's to keep the printheads from getting damaged.
If you want a cost effective way of printing black and greyscale documents, get a quality used laser printer. The HP 2200 is cheap now and is very reliable.
