I recently was trying to increase a friends power in his pc by switching his radeon hd 7750 for a 7850 both 1 gigs. After hooking up the card with the right cables and making sure everything is tight and in its place i run the computer. A message comes up on the screen that says windows failed to start to repair this please insert the windows vista disk and click repair, then follow the instructions on screen. I also have the option of then clicking run with safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with CMD, run from last successful launch, and start windows normally. It also says the problem is a recent software or hardware change. We don't have the disk so i clicked run normally. all that happens its it says microsoft and a loading bar and then it goes to a grey screen and then a crash blue screen. I have tried all the other options to no find the have the same problem. This morning i ran it for 20 minutes then turned it off, after that i then took out the cable from the card and ran that for five minutes with the card off. I then turned the computer back on with the cable in and card on and i loaded everything up and it worked fine vista loaded but it after 10 minutes it said to restart to apply changes. I restarted it and then it did the same process as i explained above. I have tried the graphics card thing that seemed to have reset it but that didn't work. Is there anyway to fix this without the vista disk? I don't really think he wants to pay fifty dollars for another disk.

Have you tried uninstalling the old Radeon drivers, and then installing new ones for that OS and card? Also, have you done a Windows update on it?

Ah okay, is the problem resolved now, though perhaps temporarily? I would do the maintenance on the drivers anyhow, just to be on the safe side.

Alrighty! Well, could you try and unplug your PSU, then reseat the GPU? If you reseated the card with the psu still plugged in, problems may have been created.

Then, try and run in safe mode. While in safe mode, uninstall the old GPU drivers and install the new ones. If you can't download the drivers from the computer, try transferring the driver.exe from another computer.

Also, what is the PSU brand and wattage? If it's a vista machine, originally, I'm worried about the power of the psu.

That PSU is good enough, in that case. Yeah, just have him try that and let us know how it goes! And don't forget about the best answer thing. :)

To reset the GPU all you have to do is unplug the 6 pin connector right?

To reset the GPU all you have to do is unplug the 6 pin connector right?

To reseat it, you must remove it from the motherboard and disconnect the connectors, then place it back into its slot, and plug the connectors back in. But be sure to ground yourself before that! haha
