once chrome opens, it runs smoothly, but it takes 5 minutes to load up

My desktop is old, windows xp, but there's not much on it. The processing speed is 1.98 GB of Ram, which I suspect could be my problem. I have fios, with a decent speed maybe 50. It takes forever for chrome to load but once it loads it works fine, or sometimes is very very slow

Potentially maybe malware, but I REALLY doubt it. The problem by your own estimation is the computer itself is just too old / low power to meet the demands of NEW high tech (less then a GB of RAM? WOW that is old!) . Cheap easy solution; New Laptop or Desktop for 'general use' is only $249 @ Walmart (Recommend a i3) . Simple clean start and you will be amazed at the difference.

this is not malware it is a cluttered hard drive
run disk cleanup (go to my computer right click local disk c check all the options for deleting temporary files)
that plus defrag the hard drive

Actually MALWARE does cause the similar problem (slow loading of just Chrome or IE) <<BUT>> given the VERY LOW END of this machines, machines like this NORMALLY perform this badly and has NOTHING to do with a 'cluttered hard drive". Your 'jump' to such a answer is without any facts.

Having had machines EXACTLY LIKE THIS 10-15 years ago, that is TYPICAL speed expectations from such low old end machines. Nothing else can make it work 'better' then to actually address the problem, replace the hardware.

the key is that once it starts it runs fine meaning loading time is the issue loading times are decided by hard disk performance
