How do I tell if my heatsink is working on my AMD FX-6300?

I have the default fan and heatsink that it comes with seated on top of the processor. When I was running BF3, the temps ran above 80 C (I am using CPUID HWMonitor). All the fans seem to be blowing so I think the heatsink is the problem. Is there a way to see if it is working? My specs are

CPU: FX 6300

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7870 Ghz Edition

RAM: 8 GB

Power Supply: 525 W

EDIT: here is a image of my temps right now.

Solution
If the fan is working then there's a chance the heat sink isn't touching the CPU. The quickest way yo check is to remove the heat sink and see what the thermal paste looks like. Remember, if you remove your heat sink you will need to clean off the thermal paste and apply new thermal paste before installing your heat sink.

Okay, is this good thermal paste to buy?
