Reference GTX 770 Question - Is it better to create a customer fan curve, or leave it to the card?

Hi there!

As I've mentioned before in previous posts, I own an Acer Predator desktop :)

The card's default temp target seems to be set to 79 degrees C. (Power target is 100%)

The highest I've seen my 770's clock speed go is 1241MHz - (I've overlocked it by 100MHz using Afterburner and it's been running stably for over a month now)

In my custom fan curve, through much testing, I can see that for the card not to go above 70 degrees, I need to set the fan curve so it reaches 80% @ 69 degrees - nothing less will do apparently and it does stay under 70 degrees to be fair.

Finally, if I leave the custom fan curve off - when playing intense games, the 770 does rapidly go to 79/80 degrees, then I notice the clock speed decreases to about 1149Mhz at its lowest point whilst under full load. The temp also remains at 79/80 degrees.

Guys I'd appreciate your wisdom in what scenrio is better for my card? Higher temps but reduced fan speed and DRASTICLY reduced noise (the fan is at 45 % @ 80 degress) or lower temps and about an extra 50MHz clock speed but 80 % fan to keep it like this - Would the fan die sooner? Or would the card die sooner at 80 degrees?

Sorry for the essay :/ - Many thanks.

it should ok i guess just dont go too crazy, for the gpu water block check http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/ ek do some really nice blocks, shit you could even spend a bit more and cool your cpu.
also if your going to go that far check out some of the water cooling kits you can buy they are basically every part you need to make a loop

you could always water cool your card if its reference you could even get a full cover to cool the ram chips too apart from that it just sounds like you have hit the limitation of air cooling.
and the card would die first.
if water cooling scairs you you need to look how your case fans are set up because poor airflow = poor temps

Ok thanks megaman! I'll look into water cooling prices and info and see what the score is! Cheers.

How long, if I might ask, do you reckon a ref 770's fan would last when it's at 80% speed whilst at full load gaming. I reckon I'd game for about 5-8 hours a week, though that probs doesn't help.

I wish I had the reference 770! Why would you want to sell it? The Titan cooler is a work of art and you just wanna throw it away for a few hundred megahertz?
The 770 fan should last a fairly long time. I'm sure a company like Nvidia wouldn't just release a cheap fan shroud with one of the best blower style coolers. The fans are made to run at whatever % speed for a very long time until you would most likely upgrade your card. Even then, when your 770 has most likely outlived it's usefulness, it should still work because of the quality that went into it. Watercooling your GPU is unnecessary unless you are trying your luck at being the K|ngP|n of GPUs.

The titan cooler isn't something you just "throw away" like its some cheap AMD cooler or a GTX 600 series cooler. Sorry if this answer was a little bias lol.Watercool if you want, but I'm for certain that your GPU would outlive itself before an overclock would be of use.

That site is nice, the fact it gives you choices based on compatability..just what I need!

I'm not sure if you can help with this one though mate: Cause it's a ref card it says the subvendor is Sapphire/PCPartner - have a look if you want

This is from Speccy: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770
Manufacturer NVIDIA
Model GeForce GTX 770
Device ID 10DE-1184
Revision A2
Subvendor Sapphire/PCPartner (174B)
Current Performance Level Level 0
Voltage 0.850 V
Technology 28 nm
Bus Interface PCI Express x16
Temperature 32 °C
Driver version 9.18.13.3788
BIOS Version 80.04.c3.00.48
Physical Memory 2047 MB
Virtual Memory 2048 MB

Everyone says Sapphire dont make Nvidia cards, so I'm a bit baffled yano.

Minor differences but aesthetically its the same.

Like Megaman said, it'll be fine if you don't get too crazy with your card. Generally around 90% should be the uncomfortable zone. If it does ever reach that, just tone down your overclock. If I may suggest this also, some good closed loop coolers are the NZXT Kraken G10. It's sort of like the R9 295x2 in a way. Do this if you don't want to fully water cool your rig unless you already have.

i didn't know they did closed loop for gpu but even then i'd still go full loop its much nicer to be able to manage your coolant plus i doubt the block will cover the ram chips so then you would need to passive cool them ie more fans then you get more noise also if he does get a block for his GPU he might awell get the block the closed loops are good but you can just spend a little more to get yourself a better result
