Hi everyone,

I have been a lurker of this forum for years now.. in and out for different computer advice but have joined today as I am getting ready to build my own computer for the first time.

Approximate Purchase Date: Ordering parts tonight/tomorrow morning if the community is able to throw parts together that quickly.

Budget Range: $2000 All-In (My company offers a $2000 interest-free loan I would like to take advantage of but the cost must remain under $2000 taxes and shipping included).

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming and surfing

Are you buying a monitor: Yes- this is a hard one for me. I desperately need a new monitor and I really would like the ASUS VG248QE 144HZ model and have it included in the $2000 budget. It does eat up over $300 of my budget though.

Parts to Upgrade: None- New Build.

Do you need to buy OS: I do have a few copies of Windows 7 Ultimate still, 8 is obviously the newer version- an OEM Windows 8 eats up about $120 of my budget.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: www.newegg.ca seems to have the best prices overall (I must order all parts from one website due to work program.)

Location: London, Ontario, Canada (13% Tax)

Parts Preferences: Intel

Overclocking: Maybe- have never done it, I am not planning to OC right away, maybe not at all.

SLI or Crossfire: Lost completely on my best options for GFX card(s)

Your Monitor Resolution: As stated above- ASUS VG248QE 144HZ

Additional Comments: I play mostly FPS games (CS:GO 90% of the time), I would like to dabble into some RP games now that I will have a system that can run them properly.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Currently running a prebuilt Gateway FX P6801 (1TB HDD, GeForce GTX 260, 12 GB DDR3, Intel i7 920)-- having issues running ALL games.

Thanks for all the time and effort everyone puts into responding to these build posts; I can't wait to get started!

I suggest using the your current RAM, the HDD, as well as the OS and DVD/CD Drive.

And Here you go all from Newegg

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($250.79 @ DirectCanada)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($32.21 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($149.99 @ NCIX)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($159.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Superclocked ACX Video Card ($554.98 @ Amazon Canada)
Case: Cooler Master HAF X ATX Full Tower Case ($179.99 @ NCIX)
Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($134.99 @ NCIX)
Monitor: Asus VG248QE 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($288.95 @ Vuugo)
Total: $1751.88

Rationale for the choices:

So I'd say re-use the RAM and the HDD, I've got a Samsung 850 SSD in there which is the latest offering by Samsung, get your OS and most used programs on there and you'll get lightning fast response.
The Hyper 212 EVO, while a budget choice, remains one of the best coolers in the market and it'll be great for overclocking should you so desire.
I chose a full tower case because I wasn't completely sure of your preferences, it certainly allows you a lot more room to overclock and maybe even get a full custom watercooling loop in there down the line, also great for airflow. There are many good mid-tower and even small form factor choices in the market and you can definitely opt for them.
I've got a 850W PSU in there in case you wanna go SLI with the graphics card later, if that is not what you want, just grab a 650W PSU from Antec/XFX/Seasonic that's decently priced and it'll be great for your needs.
GTX 780 will tear through games at 1080p, the 3GB VRAM is more than enough for 1080p (and even 1440p) gaming. Should get rid of any issues you've been having with the games so far.
If you're unsure about any of these parts or wanna switch something around (other form factor etc) do tell and I'll edit the build accordingly.

Happy building!

he lives in canada :) use newegg canada only

it is a non-overclock build. red-black theme with windowed side panel (you can show off your hardware)
for GPU consideration, the price of radeon and nvidia card is very close in canada
in US, radeon 280x vs nvidia gtx 770 = $270 vs $320

most ppl go for radeon because it is much cheaper. if they cost similar, better buy gtx card

Thanks for the input thus far everyone- just to add to this:

-I would prefer not to use any of the parts out of my old build as I would still like to use it for other purposes (I simply added it into the description to give an idea of what I am upgrading from, the RAM and HDD are also non-brand name and have seen their better days).

-Mid-Tower or Full-Tower cases do not make a difference to me- I have the space available for both.

-It would be great if I could use up as much as the $2000 as I can in this build to take full advantage of the program.

Thanks!

as you wish :)
maxed out $2000

Ok I think the issue is that PCPart Picker is not actually adding in the shipping and taxes to the total. Shipping will cost me around $80, leaving $1700 before taxes to be played with.
I didn't realize PC Part Picker did not add everything in to the total as it said it did.

3rd try. using all the best bang for the buck parts

see how much it costs?

Hi guys,

So I took everyone's builds into consideration between last night and today. I put together a list that comes in at $1995 between two sites, shipping and taxes included.

I am going to purchase my case and HDD separate from this list (thus why they're not on the list- I have not chosen them yet as I will be paying for them outside of my company program).

Are you guys able to look over this for me and make and let me know if everything will work out OK?

Thanks in advance and for all the previous help.

Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g Thermal Paste ($6.92 @ DirectCanada)

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($95.37 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($141.57 @ Newegg Canada)

Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($30.57 @ Newegg Canada)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit) ($122.41 @ DirectCanada)
Monitor: Asus VG248QE 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($327.46 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $1986.57
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

My main concerns were
-The i7 vs the i5 (I really would have liked the i7)
-Dropping from 16GB DDR3 1866Mhz to 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz
-Dropping video card from the GTX 780 6GB to the GTX 780 3GB

I also think at some point I will upgrade to one of the Corsair Liquid CPU Coolers as I like the cleaner look of them, especially if I end up with a windowed-style case.
