High pitched/high frequency noise coming from the CPU area!

Greetings everyone.

I recently replaced the thermal paste of my Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 CPU and now, after a couple of days, I started to hear a high pitched/high frequency noise coming from the CPU area! It\s hard to hear with any other background noises going on, but it drives me nuts as I am quite sensitive to high frequency noises. The noise disappears everytime I give the CPU a task (i.e. open a new tab) and comes back again after the CPU is finished with that task. I guess you could say that the noise is emitted only when the CPU is idling. Also, the idle temps are quite inconsistent and vary from ~43 to 65 degrees celsius. What could be the problem? The noise is gonna drive me insane...

I don't think so, because the sound is intermittent. Besides, it wouldn't go away after I assign a task for the processor.

Coil whine from a dying fan can be intermittent. When the fan is running at lower speeds it can be more audible than when it is spinning faster.

But the fan of the speed doesn't change, and the noise still disappears COMPLETELY after I assign a task to the CPU. Your solution doesn't make sense then, right?

Also, I forgot to mention that it's a laptop. A Dell XPS M1710.
