Hey there I have an old Pentium D. That may be overheating. Recently I got a new power supply because my old one started to suffer from power surges. After the new power supply install no more surges and automatic shutdown. HOWEVER> Whenever I play a game now, after a couple minutes my performance dies. I downloaded HWMONITOR to check my temps while I play, but the results are very confusing.

The current "value" never seems to go much above 40C. HOWEVER the max value indicates values of above 99C when doing anything intense... all while the current value remains low. However, when this max value gets to 100C I get throttled down. How am I getting a max temp of 100+C when my current value never reads remotely that high? Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Pentium Ds do not have core temp monitors, so all I can off of is the CPUTIN field....

Solution
Your readings are quite clear, you have heavy overheating under load. Your current temps have nothing to do with max temps, because they do not represent the toughest scenario for your cpu, like playing games or running benchmarks, rendering... You either need to clean the cpu heatsink from dust, reseat it and reapply the paste, or get a new cpu cooler. After that, a good airflow in the case would help as well.
