Anyone ever put an 1150 processor in an 1155 motherboard? Did I just ruin them?

Picked up a refurb motherboard to replace a server in a pinch and went to store and asked for an 1155 processor XEON E3-1240 V2, but the guy gave me a a XEON E3-1240 V3 (an 1150 processor instead). Dang thing fits in the socket. I tried to boot the motherboard and it powered up but didn't post. That's when I re-read the box and noticed the little V2 (why does Intel do this?)

Did I toast the motherboard? The Processor? Both? I need motherboard because I am rebuilding a Windows 2003 server and I can't find any other motherboards that still support that OS.

I know they are not pin compatible...I had no intention of putting an 1150 socket CPU in the 115 motherboard. The guy gave me the wrong one. What I am wondering is there any chance the motherboard will still function if I get another CPU

I should note that the motherboard actually kept trying to start. It would spin up, shut down, spin up, shut down...at first I thought it was bad RAM as this motherboard all cycle like that when tests RAM settings. Never reach a post screen though.

I would assume that you should be fine. I would take the CPU back and have them take it back at no restocking cost as they screwed up. Get the one that you want and try it again. You should get onto at least Server 08 R2. 2003 is dead and out of support.
