I've reached the end of my (limited) tech skills in trying to get my computer back online. I haven't been able to use the internet on my PC because it's having a IP address conflict - at least that's the error message I got from Windows.

I suddenly lost the internet connection on my computer a few days ago and it hasn't come back, which is weird because the icon on my system tray in Windows 7 says I'm connected even though I have no connectivity when I try to use any program that requires an internet connection. No other devices in our household are having this problem.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused this is that I plugged into the modem directly for a few days before switching back to using wifi. Is it possible that using the network as wifi and with a hardwire created "two computers" with the same IP address? I'm now unable to get connected using either wifi or hardwired.

Before this total failure I was having some trouble with the wifi. I would have to constantly reset the router multiple times per day (which is why I switched to a hardwire in the first place).

What I've tried so far:
r

eleasing and renewing my ip address through ipconfig in the command prompt (it just gives me the same IP address again)
ensuring that the IPv4 properties are set to assign an IP address automatically
updating the firmware on the router; I also checked the modem and I think it's up to date
power cycle computer, router and modem

ok...
Disable the WiFi adapter...

Restart the computer with the Network cable unplugged

Plug the cable in and ... what is the ip address? a proper one from the router or a 169.254.x.x?

use the command line and "ipconfig /all"

What do you get for the IPv4 address subnet and default gateway?

ok. I just did what you asked. IP config / all shows my IP address to be a legit one from the router. 192.168.X.X. The subnet mask is 255 255 255 0. The default gateway is the router. 192.168.1.1. thank you for your help
