the stores here sell "surge protectors" and it even says "good for computer" on the package. I got a pretty cheap Noma 6 outlet surge protector rated for 312 joules.($12) I did look it up and I guess it is just a power strip, cannot really find any info on it that would suggest using it with a PC. I do have a good one but I need another one for a separate room. I am at a loss as to return it and by an actual surge protector from best Buy or keep it and give it the benefit of the doubt. Still what are some good $10-$20 4 to 6 outlet surge protector ?

I personally use a Belkin BE112230-08 and have had it for about four years now and during that time dust and dirt from the floor have gotten into the sockets and it hasn't cause me a problem. I would recommend you check it out, also I found it on Amazon for $17.35 and it looks like a number one seller in Netbook and Accessories. Here is a link to the item on Amazon if you are interested: Belkin BE112230-08

Hope this helps!

This one is in store at our local Best buy ..Dynex 4-Outlet Surge Protector (DX-D1111), I have not heard of the brand, Belkin is a well known brand for this type of thing though... Not to many stores locally have actual surge suppressors mostly just dollar store rebrands. Online there is lots but does not make sense to pay $10 in shipping. The ones at Staples are much more than any other store or retailer for some reason..an APC 6 outlet strip is 19.99 but the same one is 5.99 on newegg

You should be fine with that, depending on your location of residence. Power surge aren't that common however, it's best to have peace of mind than to find your valuables fried one day right? also sorry for the late response. One last thing I'd like to mention is that if you would like to get yourself a decent surge protector at a reasonable price consider the "ship to store" option it doesn't cost you anything. All you have to do is go pick it up when it is available, however the availability of the item varies by location.

If the surge protector I recommended interests you and you would like to consider the ship to store option Staples has the option. You can take a look here. If not then just take a look at the other options and see which one peaks your interest. Just make sure "ship to store" is available on the product you are considering. Hope it helps!

T took the cardboard package of and I did find the UL sticker so I guess it is a certified surge protective device but the model is quite old maybe 10 years or more. So I don't think it actually meets today's standard for a surge protector, Plus there is no warranty aside from the 1 year warranty that only covers the power bar, not what your trying to protect from a surge. Most Have a warranty that actually cover the damage if it fails. I just found all this info recently. I just don't know...I would like to think that Canadian tire sells CSA approved goods and meet the UL 1449 standard

UL is not about transistor safety. UL is about human safety. UL1449 requires protectors to be designed so as to not create fire and other threats to humans. It says nothing about how well transistors are protected.

However even protectors with UL1449 listing have created fires. Last October, the new owners of APC discovered many APC protectors so dangerous that they must be disposed of immediately. Others also have this same problem - just not as blatant.

Be concerned about any protector located on a rug or behind furniture. Numbers say why. Destructive surges can be hundreds of thousands of joules. How many joules does you protector claim to absorb? Hundreds? Never ignore such numbers. UL1449 was created because so many protectors were creating house fires.
