What are the Nvidia Teslas' for and why are they so much money?

Solution
They are accelerator cards. The easiest way to explain it is through this http://www.nvidia.com/object/what-is-gpu-computing.html
Essentially the work load is handed off to the GPU rather than the CPU to do all the work. The video at the bottom is not only entertaining, but surprisingly good at explaining it.

Sorry I cant say more, they are a bit of a rare topic. The TITAN super computer for example uses 18 THOUSAND Tesla K20 cards, nearly 300k Opteron warsaw cores, and 710TB of memory. Why? To do massive amounts of computing, insanely fast. (In other words, FOR SCIENCE!)

It's a workstation GPU meant for use in super computers and it has its specific uses.

Quote from their website:

" Tesla product family is designed ground-up for parallel computing and programming and offers exclusive High performance computing features. "

If you're familiar with the Nvidia Quadro series they are expensive because they are used specifically for CAD programs.

Simply put,
they are for making triple A video games like Battlefield 4, 3D modeling and creating those computer graphic movies you see. Like Frozen, Cars. They can also be used for movie effects like in star trek the GPU has to render the whole image of a space fight and the space ship. This cannot be done on consumer GPUs because they lack certain features that video rendering cards have, but these cards also can't play video games well either.

This is where the GTX Titan comes in. That's why that card is $1,000. It's a hybrid between a video rendering card and video game playing card.

Wow, I didn't know that, I was always wondering why people would spend $1000 on a card that performs similar to cheaper cards when playing games. It's so they can render stuff and what not. Thanks
