Yes formatting wipes the drive. You might be able to recover some of the data by sending it to a data recovery company but that is an expensive process. Figure to spend up to about a $1000.00 to recover bits and pieces from a formatted drive. Probably what you would get back would be fragmented and not usable in the usual sense.
