I read all your steps , even though my disk isnt new its old .thought i could have missed something , so im trying to pull the data off A WD 600 , being made in 2006 , meant its not only not interchangeable , but its a 40 pin so picked up the adapter needed to attempt at least to use as ext drive.it finally shows up , but i wasnt given options other than goin to D M and check properties .It said the disk is working fine , since i was becoming stuck i updated drivers , which helped , now disk manager suggested initializing drive,i t hought great , but i check the box windows suppose to do the rest and each time i receive a time out error..i repeat when it allows and same error right at the finish line ! ideas ? thank you

It could be beyond hope. Test it with Data LifeGuard Diagnostic for Windows while it's in the enclosure:
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3

Use the long/extended test. If it fails under testing, only a data recovery service will be able to get any data off it (shockingly expensive).

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) you should never rely on a single hard drive to keep important data on.
For the past 10-15 years I've kept copies of all my data on no less than four external hard drives, and when one fails I replace it asap.

Hi Areohen! Sorry if this has been covered. How are you connecting your old drive to your PC? Via what kind of adapter? Also, are you trying to "read" off the old drive, to get files from it, or reformat it so it can be used as an extra drive? Also, what OS are you using, and what OS was used on the original drive? This sometimes has a great impact on it's usability.
